John Howe

John Howe was born in 1957 in Vancouver, Canada. After High School, he moved to France in 1976 and studied illustration at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Strasbourg. He currently lives in Switzerland with his wife, Fataneh, who is also an illustrator, and their eleven-year-old son, Dana. He has written and illustrated a number of French children's books, and provided cover illustrations for some of the finest fantasy autors in the world.

John Howe's work has featured in several of the highly successful Tolkien Calendars, in posters commemorating the 50th anniversary of the publication of the The Hobbit and on the jackets and covers of the HarperCollins centenary editions of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion.

He writes: 'Somewhat shamefacedly, I am obliged to admit that I first read The Two Towers and The Return of the King, and finally The Fellowship of the Ring. I believe I was twelve or so at the time (I had read The Hobbit several years before), and the road to higher fantasy was only to be reached through the shelves of the small town public library. Thus, I plunged directly into the world of Tolkien just above the Falls of Rauros and have been swimming diligently ever since.'
